Robert B. Penne, M.D. has been a member of the Wills Eye Institute medical staff and  Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Service since 1990. He grew up in North Dakota/Minnesota and attended college at North Dakota State University, graduating  first in his class. He  attended medical school at the University of Minnesota, completed his internship at Hennepin County Medical Center, and did his ophthalmology residency at the Wills Eye Institute. Upon completion of his residency, he did a fellowship in Neuro-Orbital disease, followed by a fellowship in Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, a member of the American  Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, the Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Ophthalmology. At the local level he is Past President of the Ophthalmic Club and belongs to the Inter-County Ophthalmic Society.

Dr. Penne is an Attending Surgeon at the Wills Eye Institute, Co-Director of the Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery Department, as well as Co-Director of the Ocular Cicatricial Pemphigoid Clinic. He is also Chief of Ophthalmology at the Main Line Health System Hospitals. He has authored numerous scientific papers and book chapters and is an Associate Editor of the Yearbook of Ophthalmology.
